This Week in Astrology: Equinox Equilibrium

Autumnal Equinox…

We note the harmony of Earth and self on Monday with the September Equinox, as the Sun crosses over the celestial equator. Equinox (from the Latin “aequinoctium”, meaning “equal night”) is a stillpoint in the wobble of the planet (and ourselves) in which we come into perfect equilibrium before leaning again in the opposite direction.

The Autumnal Equinox notes the entry of the Sun into Libra, and speaks to the balance of polarities. Light and dark, warmth and cold, activity and rest all find purpose and peace with one another. The gift of Libra is recognizing that we are not promised a balanced existence; instead, we seek – and create – balance within a life of imbalance.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Equinox is a time for reflection and gratitude, celebrating that which we have created and seeded in the light of the Spring and Summer as we face and prepare for the longer shadows of the months ahead. These lights and shadows are within us as much as they are out in the world. By peering into our own dark recesses and facing our fears, we may find the resources hidden within. It is by strength and will that we move through life. By setting intentions in this portal, we may re-align ourselves to our divine mission so that our own light may shine bright as the Sun’s recedes.

Sister Vesta, the keeper of our spiritual flame, emphasizes this point as she turns retrograde on Equinox. She reminds us that we must keep the fire within us stoked and burning so that it may light up the dark, and keep us warm & fed as we continue our purposeful journey. On the same day, the Moon meets up with the North Node in Cancer, aligning our desires with our destiny. Find stability within yourself as the world ebbs and flows in the Cancer rhythms. All will come and go in perfect balance.

Know that this is a season of harmonization, not just a day. The actual balance point of night and day will not happen until a few days after Equinox, due to the Sun’s size, radius and atmospheric refraction. Equilux (“equal light”) occurs for all RA MA studios on Thursday (due to their latitudes). Depending on where you are, there may be a day or so variance.

Also be aware of a shift in circadian rhythms with the changing of the seasons which may affect moods and sleep. Be mindful and nourish/nurture yourself; we’re just recalibrating. And take notice of potential communication glitches, with geostationary satellites experiencing power and transmission disruptions due to the alignment of the Sun to Earth.

New Libra Moon…

The Sun and Moon conjoin in a New Moon in Libra on Saturday, in opposition to Chiron in Aries. Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is in retrograde until December, calling up our traumas, wounds and vulnerabilities so that they may be healed. Its Aries placement addresses the very core of who we are, and why we came to planet Earth. The uniting of our light energies in Libra calls on all the wisdom of the Equinox, creating balance and harmony within the imbalances and dissonance of life on a polarity planet that is a bit out of whack.

Saturn aligns with the South Node in Capricorn on the same day as it begins to move forward once again, while a quincunx from the Sun and Moon to Uranus in Taurus adds a soulful connection. Both ask us to free ourselves from outmoded ways of thinking about our world, its resources, and the roles that we play in and on behalf of it. This New Moon is an ideal time to remember and remind that we live in harmony with – and because of – all things. How we heal ourselves will inform how we help those around us to heal… as we all strive to heal our wounded world.

Happy Birthday, Tej…

We celebrate Tej, of the magical subtle body and Libra heart, on her birthday on New Moon Eve (Friday). The Moon will still be in Virgo, the Goddess Mother who, like Tej, tends to the children of Earth and connects them to the heavens. We offer gratitude for all the love and grace she shares with us. Special Sadhana to honor her at RA MA – 4am Friday.
