This Week in Astrology: Full Harvest Moon

Blue Full Moon Halloween

Full Harvest Moon in Pisces…

Full Moons always call on polarities, with the Moon shining bright in reflection of the Sun from across the chart and sky. The signs involved in this week’s Harvest Moon have a dualistic nature of their own. Virgo, in which the Sun has been sitting for a couple of weeks now, is representative of the last goddess to leave Earth for Olympus, bridging the physical and divine worlds.

Pisces, just opposite, is represented by a glyph of two fish tethered together, one swimming in the ocean of the real, the other in a sea of imagination and dreams. Both signs and the polarity of the Full Moon illustrate the push and pull between the realms of body and soul, human and divine, and the motivating factors of fear and love.

The Full Moon occurs in conjunction with Lilith and Neptune in Pisces, with the Sun and Mars opposing (and Mercury, Venus, and Juno in the Virgo wings). Additional positive aspects to Pluto and challenges from Jupiter stir the pot. Staring into the mystery of the deep is what is called for. How you choose to perceive it determines what you will glean from it.

We’ll be feeling sensitive and tuned in to others’ emotions. Your imagination will be enhanced and may tilt toward ideals &/or worst-case scenarios. Answering the “what if’s” of each and both will help to give you a sense of the parameters of your dreams, fears, and realities so that you can find balance and healing between. The Pisces Moon will tend toward the depths of the seas in which it swims; the Virgo Sun invites you to find the flow of it all. “Just keep swimming.”

This Moon falls on Friday the 13th for those of us in the U.S., bringing in the superstitions of the day and number. “Paraskevidekatriaphobia” (the fear of Friday the 13th) is rooted in the Christian tradition, recognizing Judas as the 13th guest at the table for the Last Supper, on the eve of Jesus’ death on Good Friday. A similar Norse legend has Loki as the 13th guest at a different table. The arrests of hundreds of Knights Templar on Friday the 13th in 1307 also echoes the date and the doom.

The phobia, however, is a more recent phenomenon, appearing in the last century or so. Friday the 13th is considered the most feared day and date in history, afflicting around 20 million people in the U.S., and reportedly costing close to a billion dollars in lost revenue. On the other hand, thirteen is considered by many to be a lucky number – so again, it’s all about your perspective. What we echo and vibrate becomes our reality.

This is also our “Harvest Moon”, (also known as the “Full Corn Moon” and the “Barley Moon”). It is the Full Moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox, bringing the rising Moon closer to the horizon over several nights so that harvest chores are more easily accomplished. Let it be a reminder of the light and support from the heavens as we live our daily lives.

Love and devotion…

Venus and Mercury trine Vesta this week as she squares off with the Moon. The asteroid Vesta (referencing the vestal virgins) represents the feminine “Sister” archetype. She speaks to the purity, dedication, and commitment to tending the spiritual flame. This week, allow your love, money, and thoughts to be elevated to a more spiritual place.

The Moon, with its more emotional yearning for safety and security, may have you feeling a bit out of your comfort zone… but have faith! All that you need will come to you. Both Venus and Mercury enter Libra on Saturday, bringing our relationships into play as we seek balance and harmony with our significant others (romantic, platonic, business…). Tend first to your relationship with yourself. And know that every partnership has a third participant at all times – the Divine itself.

Pallas’ opposition to Uranus and Mars’ square to Jupiter provide opportunities for us to recognize our freedom and what it asks of us. With the energies of the Full Moon building through the week in addition to these aspects, watch for an abundance of energy and optimism. Keep your hands on the reins, and remember your own energetic force field – your aura – that buffers you against the energies of others and the world (and even yourself). Even after Labor Day – wearing white is always helpful. 😉
