Venus, Saturn, & Pluto Go Retro by Emmalea Russo

REVERSALS AND LONGINGS

PLANETS BE RETROGRADING

“Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of earth’s greetings. Now, think.” — Hildegard von Bingen

ONE
The moon wanes and Venus has just stationed Retrograde, which means this Friday begins VENUS DAZE, our hazy, dazy, lazy, rigorous, and connective deep dive into planet V as she travels underworld and back again. I’ve chosen themes for the seven Fridays of her retrograde cycle that mirror her movements (find them at the end of this newsletter). We will look at her, track her, share sightings, read, go slow, and see where Venus takes us. Happy to pick people up along the way, but best to join from the start.

TWO
In this midst of this collective stirring, I woke thinking of paintings from the Middle Ages — Hildegard of Bingen is one of those medieval celebrities — saint, visionary, painter, music maker, inventor of secret alphabets. I woke to a scroll of olden info. Not just the 12th century, but 2012. Not just 2012, but the winter before this spring. The sensorium’s changed — at once sterilized and sensitized. The very regular smell of a cold supermarket crowded with strangers — a scent that I rarely gave much thought to in the before times — is now embued with longing. Supermarket nostalgia. Closeness nostalgia. Coffee shop nostalgia. Subway system nostalgia. Do you find this? Afferent yearnings? Simple, burning reminiscences? We left the past and now it haunts. The past left us and we return via spectral inlets.

Friends and clients have been coming to me with tales of hauntings. Now that it’s 2020, these happen not only in/by dreams but through our multitude of lit-up devices. It’s frightening to say what the ancients easily said — retrogrades mean reversals. Reversals of fortune, of “progress”, of momentum, of ______. A flip of the coin, a surrender of will. A fuller planetary update is below — three planets stationing retrograde this week. Pluto was already Rx. Mercury will follow. Others, too. We don’t need the whole sky pausing to tell us that our wills are getting checked and rechecked at the supermarket door and in our medievalist dreams. But to figure out what the planets are actually doing when they go Rx can help.

THREE: TO PAUSE
You can read the below interpretations for specific planetary stuff. And/or, here’s a question for this week as so many planets appear to be PAUSING/stationing retrograde. What does it mean to pause/change course? These planets are pulling into the station — you know that slow and screeching halt. Then the train will appear to move backward for a while — a new kind of sight — perhaps a little sickening, disorienting, enlivening. How are you/we pausing? Looking around? Feeling space/life newly? “Change life….” as Rimbaud said.

When we let it, astrology “sets us up with the spirit in the sky.” I suspect such mass retrogrades might allow us entrance into the weirder corners of our own psyches and our togetherness. The question I get most involves some form of: “how do I work with ____” or “how do I use this planetary energy for…..” Ineluctably, I’m like, “learn about the planet.” In Sky Alchemy, we talked about dialing the planets’ direct lines. Holding our ear up to the sky and listening. Seeing how they show up in our daily lives. Should a past lover visit or should your text messages get drenched with spirits of yore, Venus Rx is with you.

May 11: Saturn stationed Rx is karmic. Saturn glacially retrogrades until September 29th, so where is S right now in your sky? What feels to be sorting itself out on some invisible plane? More on this soon, but I like the idea of feeling it first, then figuring. Meaning, Saturn (& Mercury) reminds us, can get in the way of observation.

May 11: Mercury entered Gemini: Mercury is our microphone. In Gemini, it’s specific and prodigious in speech and communique. Venus and Mercury are bound together for a while — the planet of love getting a whole network devoted to her yearnings.

May 13: Venus stationed Rx in Gemini & Mars entered Pisces: How do we love? How have we broken up? What is the relationship between desire and love? How/why/where do we make art? What even is an EX? Public/private lives? What does it mean to leave? To pause? To redefine action? This and more as we DAZE.
